Asean didirikan pada tanggal 08 Agustus 1967 di Bangkok- Thailand.

Berdirinya Asean melalui Deklarasi Bangkok yang diprakarsai pertama kali oleh 5 negara pendiri Asean, yaitu:

Adapun tujuan dibentuknya organisasi ASEAN ini, yaitu untuk membantu dalam meningkatkan pertumbuhan Ekonomi , Mengembangkan kebudayaan, Menjaga dan memajukan perdamaian, khususnya di dalam daerah Negara-negara Asia Tenggara.

Prinsip-prinsip utama ASEAN
ASEAN mempunyai Prinsip Utama, yaitu:
  • Menghormati kemerdekaan, kedaulatan, kesamaan, integritas wilayah nasional, dan identitas nasional setiap negara
  • Hak untuk setiap negara untuk memimpin kehadiran nasional bebas daripada campur tangan, subversif atau koersi pihak luar
  • Tidak mencampuri urusan dalam negeri sesama negara anggota
  • Penyelesaian perbedaan atau perdebatan dengan damai
  • Menolak penggunaan kekuatan yang mematikan
  • Kerja sama efektif antara anggota
